Noah Kalina’s 6 Years Worth of Photos

15 million people have watched Noah Kalina’s 6 year (2356 days) of daily photos, what a unique way for a photographer to promote himself. Over the years he has been interviewed by tons of blogs and photgrapher magazines… some interesting quotes where he explains how the internet has enabled him to be a successful photographer.

2008 Gothamist Interview discussing the perks of internet fame

Things have changed considerably. The video was accepted by both the art world and pop culture worlds. As a result I was flown to a show that displayed everyday in a museum in Switzerland and I was flown out to LA to attend parties and take part in the VH1 Big in ‘06 awards. For a time I was really busy preparing for all of these different shows and events. I also get a lot more emails now but for the most part things have seemed to have died down. At least for now.

Regarding my professional photography it has helped, but I can’t really quantify how much. Millions of people have looked at my video and a lot check out my photography afterwards, but it hasn’t really turned into jobs. I think people look at my work now and say, “This is the work of that guy who took a photo of himself every day for six years,” scratch their chins and move on.

Interview with Noah where he discusses how he gets paid…

I just put my work online, either my website, which I have had since 2000 (it looked way different back then) or on the photo sharing websites. I started with Fotolog after I left art school and then ended up on flickr. 90 percent of the work I get now is through flickr and other 10 percent is from personal connections I have made. I have had art directors and photo editors reach out to me after seeing my work on flickr. Then it snowballs. They publish you in a magazine, another magazine sees it, you get another job. That art director moves to another magazine and hires me at the new mag.

The story behind the music … Carly Commando (Noah’s girfriend at the time) created the song specifically for the video…. and since has licensed the video a NBA commercial and also to a German bank. With over 1.3 million followers on myspace it’s clear that she is doing quite well with her inspirational music. Though with anything that has become popular online there is always a wee bit of controversy has many people have claimed she has ripped of Philip Glass’s Truman Sleep’s piece from the movie Truman Show… and she responds to that criticsm here.

I don’t even think I had ever seen The Truman Show in full until after Noah’s video came out. A lot of youtube comments were “this is Philip Glass,” etc. I was really confused and stressed out, because that’s the last thing I wanted to hear. So, after someone posted what song “Everyday” sounded like, Noah and I immediately went to listen to it. We were shocked. This question has been asked a lot.. and it’s really hard to answer it convincingly, because the 2 songs have a similar melody line. I wasn’t aware of the song “Truman Sleeps” at all, but they do sound similar. All I can say to that is “Everyday” is my own piece, written for Noah, in front of Noah. I’ve had many freakouts concerning this, because I’ve had a really hard time answering mean and rude e-mails that don’t care what I have to say, anyway. From what I’ve heard, and after finally watching the Truman Show, Philip Glass is a great composer.

Homer Simpson pays tribute in an episode of The Simpsons… The Simpsons used the actual music from Noah’s video though it wasn’t until after it aired that she was properly paid for the song

Parody Video watched 2.6 million times ….

In it for the Bling, Ning Closing Free Forums

Recently laying off 40% of there staff (70 people)… the new CEO Jason Rosenthal sent out this letter to the company. They have updated a blog post to say that you will have 10 weeks to decide whether to pay for Ning’s service. Check there blog on May 4th to see the new pricing options.

Team,

When I became CEO 30 days ago, I told you I would take a hard look at our business. This process has brought real clarity to what’s working, what’s not, and what we need to do now to make Ning a big success.

My main conclusion is that we need to double down on our premium services business. Our Premium Ning Networks like Friends or Enemies, Linkin Park, Shred or Die, Pickens Plan, and tens of thousands of others both drive 75% of our monthly US traffic, and those Network Creators need and will pay for many more services and features from us.

So, we are going to change our strategy to devote 100% of our resources to building the winning product to capture this big opportunity. We will phase out our free service. Existing free networks will have the opportunity to either convert to paying for premium services, or transition off of Ning. We will judge ourselves by our ability to enable and power Premium Ning Networks at huge scale. And all of our product development capability will be devoted to making paying Network Creators extremely happy.

As a consequence of this change, I have also made the very tough decision to reduce the size of our team from 167 people to 98 people. As hard as this is to do, I am confident that this is the right decision for our company, our business, and our customers. Marc and I will work diligently with everyone affected by this to help them find great opportunities at other companies.

I’ve never seen a more talented and devoted team, and it has been my privilege to get to know and work with each and every one of you over the last 18 months.

We’ll use today to say goodbye to our friends and teammates who will be leaving the company. Tomorrow, I will take you through, in detail, our plans for the next three months and our new focus.

Thanks,
Jason Rosenthal

Zombie Geocities

Geocities was to User Generated Content in the 90s what myspace is in the new millennium… a free for all of animated gifs and user controlled layouts… sadly Yahoo closed down Geocities and people are still wondering when myspace will finally reinvent itself.

For those wanting to get some nostalgia for 90s internet layouts there is geocitizer, where you can turn any website into a Geocities website.

Hitler Downfall Movie Parodies Destroyed by Constantin Films

The movie company that’s responsible for the Downfall movie, which has been watched a fraction of the time all the parodies have been, have decided to take the viral marketing sensation that there movie became off youtube.

According to a NPR article Corynne McSherry, an attorney with the Electronic Frontier Foundation, explains how fair use works: It lets people use a film clip or a paragraph from an article or a piece of music if they are creating commentary or satire.

“All the ones that I’ve seen are very strong fair use cases and so they’re not infringing, and they shouldn’t be taken down. But via this filter system they are taken down virtually automatically,” she says.

It certainly does sound like Google/Youtube are choosing the rights of the few over the rights of the many, this is a clear case of the UGC community being treated as second rate citizens.

What’s really sad is this movie was a dead fish from 2005-2008 until it hit youtube in the 3rd quarter of 2008

Funny enough the director said “I think I’ve seen about 145 of them! Of course, I have to put the sound down when I watch. Many times the lines are so funny, I laugh out loud, and I’m laughing about the scene that I staged myself! You couldn’t get a better compliment as a director.” Some of Hirschbiegel’s favorites are the one where Hitler hears of Michael Jackson’s death, and one in which the Fuhrer can’t get Billy Elliot tickets.

Welcome to the end of the internet where everything comes back to the beginning as even the copyright battle will involve Hitler… thanks Godwin “As an online discussion grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving Nazis or Hitler approaches 1.”

South Park 200th Episode UGC Site

SouthPark since episode 1 has really embraced there internet audience, and with SouthPark200.com they let the users get in on some of the fun (though I haven’t seen any Muhammad photos). Very cool though I doubt it’ll have the viral reach of the “Make Your Own South Park Character
